Fred Sasakamoose, who was the first NHL player with treaty status in 1954, left, stands with chiefs during the Canadian anthem at Oilers vs Blackhawks in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday, December 29, 2017.  He credits hockey with helping him survive residential schools but only played 11 games with the Chicago Blackhawks before he defected to build a family and heal from sexual assault and other traumas he suffered in St. Michael’s school at Duck Lake. Earlier the same day Mr. Sasakamoose, who works with youth, was recognized with the order of Canada, saying "today is the first day I am truly Canadian." Amber Bracken
